  • Amory B. Lovins
    Co-founder and Chief Scientist,
    Rocky Mountain Institute

    For more than 4 decades, Amory B. Lovins has been advising about the nexus of energy, resources, environment, development, and security in more than 50 countries including the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense. He is widely considered among the world’s leading authorities on energy—especially its efficient use and sustainable supply—and a fertile innovator in integrative design. He has published more than 30 books and 470 papers, and won numerous awards including the Right Livelihood Award (the “Alternative Nobel”) , the Onassis Foundation’s first Delphi Prize (one of the world’s top environmental awards), the Nissan Prize, the Blue Planet Prize, and the Shingo Prize (Nobel –like prize in Manufacturing). In 2009, Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world, Foreign Policy and one of the 100 top global thinkers. His 31st book with a large RMI team, Reinventing Fire (2011, also in Japanese), roadmaps how to eliminate U.S. oil, coal, and nuclear power by 2050 and save $5 trillion, led by business for profit. In 2013–16 he co-led a similarly rigorous and surprising roadmapping of China’s energy transformation for the National Development and Reform Commission, helping to inform the 13th Five Year Plan. In 2016, the President of Germany awarded him that nation’s highest civilian honor for helping inspire and guide its energy transition.

  • Katie Hill
    Head of Supplier Clean Energy Program, Environmental Initiatives, Apple

    Katie Hill leads Apple’s supplier clean energy program, which helps the company’s manufacturing partners reduce their energy use, power their facilities with clean energy and build high-quality renewable energy projects. Her team aims to reduce Apple’s carbon footprint by working with its suppliers to install more than 4 gigawatts of new clean energy worldwide, including 2 gigawatts in China, by 2020. Prior to Apple, she spent four years in India investing in clean-tech companies at Acumen, an impact investment fund, and currently serves on its Advisory Board. She has also worked for McKinsey & Company, Generation Investments, Dalberg Global Advisors and the China Greentech Initiative. Katie received an M.B.A., a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Economics from Stanford University.

  • Masaaki Kobayashi
    Vice-Minister,
    Ministry of the Environment, Japan

    Appointed in June 2016, Masaaki Kobayashi currently serves as Vice-Minister of the Environment at the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. He joined the Environment Agency in 1979. Since then, he has held positions such as Director of Environmental Impact Assessment Division of Environmental Policy Bureau, Policy Planning Division of Environmental Health Department, and Policy Planning Division of Environmental Policy Bureau at the Ministry of the Environment. He researched on Japan-U.S. comparison of Climate Change Policy at East West Center in the U.S. Before current position, he was assigned to Director General of Environmental Management Bureau and Environmental Policy Bureau, and Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs.

  • Hervé Touati
    Managing Director and Business Renewables Center (BRC), Rocky Mountain Institute

    Hervé Touati is Managing Director at Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). He focuses his work on disruptive business models and technologies in the electricity sector and mechanisms to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy by large corporations, such as the Business Renewables Center (BRC) and the Sunshine for Mines initiatives. Hervé is also Chairman of Black Bear Energy (BBE), a for-profit spin-off of RMI acting as an owner’s representative for Real Estate Investment Trusts in distributed energy. Outside RMI, he is an advisor to Greentech Capital Advisors and cleantech startups in Europe and North America. Hervé held several senior positions at E.ON, Germany’s leading utility. He was global MD of the solar and biomass businesses at E.ON Climate & Renewables. He founded and was the first CEO of E.ON Connecting Energies, E.ON’s distributed energy business. E.ON received the prize of “Best European Greentech Company” in 2013 for his work. Earlier, Hervé served as a leading expert for the energy sector with McKinsey & Co. Hervé received a M.S. in Mathematics from Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley. In his early engineering career, he authored more than 20 technical papers, was recipient of one IEEE Best Paper Award and one US patent.

  • Damian Ryan
    Acting CEO, The Climate Group

    Damian Ryan is Acting Chief Executive Officer and a member of the senior management team of The Climate Group. Previously, he was Director of Strategy & Planning Coordination. He joined The Climate Group in 2008.
    Over the last five years he has led the organization’s international climate policy work, covering a range of issues including the UN climate negotiations, international aviation emissions, climate finance and tracking policy in the US, India and China.
    Prior to joining the organization, Damian was a foreign policy analyst for New Zealand’s diplomatic service, dealing with international multilateral trade and climate negotiations.
    He holds a degree in applied science and a masters in international relations.

  • Stefan Schurig
    Member of the Executive Board / Director Climate Energy,
    World Future Council

    Dipl. Ing. Stefan Schurig is an architect by training and advises governments and parliamentarians around the globe on the subjects of climate change, renewable energy and sustainable cities. He is a Member of the Executive Board of the World Future Council Foundation (WFC), a sister organisation of the Right Livelihood Award, better known as the Alternative Nobel Prize. Stefan initiated the international policy campaign on renewable energy and sustainable cities and is a member of the Executive Committee of the global 100% RE campaign. Stefan is also appointed member of the steering committee of the World Urban Campaign of UN Habitat. With the WFC he founded the international expert commission on Cities and Climate Change which developed the greater vision for ’regenerative cities’, which he co-authored. Under his leadership, the WFC also opened offices in Africa and China. Since 2015 Stefan also teaches at the Master programme of Urban Planning at the Hamburg University.

    Helene von Reis started her career at the IKEA Group in 1998. Over the years, she has held a number of positions within the company, working with IKEA Communications as Managing Director, Information Manager at IKEA of Sweden, and Store Manager in China. From 2013, she served as Deputy Retail Manager in IKEA US. In August 2016, she was appointed as Chief Executive Officer and President, IKEA Japan KK.

  • Thierry Lepercq
    Executive Vice-President, ENGIE
    In charge of Research, Technology & Innovation

    Thierry Lepercq has been Executive Vice-President of Engie, in charge of Research, Technology and Innovation since 2016. He is in charge of Engie’s research labs as well as the Group’s venture capital and incubation activities. He oversees the launch of EngieTech, the Group’s entity dedicated to the development of mass-scale businesses in the field of EnTechs (disruptive business models leveraging on decentralized energy and digital technologies).
    He was previously President and co-founder of Solairedirect, a global leader of solar power acquired by Engie in 2015. Solairedirect has developed a distinctive business model focused on making solar power the most competitive energy source, by industrializing the development, construction, financing and operation value chains. The company has operations spanning four continents and over 1 GW built.
    Prior to founding Solairedirect he had a 20-year carrier in technology finance, first with Bankers Trust in New York, and later with Banque Arjil (Lagardère Group) and Oddo & Cie. In 1999 he founded NetsCapital, a boutique investment bank focused on information technology which structured 40 transactions for a total of 400 M€. In 2004 Thierry Lepercq set up Réseau Innovation Energie, a think tank with such participants as Caisse des Dépôts, Suez, EDF and Gaz de France. He is a graduate of HEC (Paris).

  • Dolf Gielen
    Director, Innovation and Technology Centre,
    International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

    Dolf Gielen is the director of the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) since January 2011. The IITC is located in Bonn, Germany, and supports the IRENA member countries in accelerated technology development and deployment through technology cost information and project development assistance, assistance with energy transition planning, and innovation strategies. Before joining IRENA, he was Chief of the Energy Efficiency and Policy Unit at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Vienna. In that capacity, he managed a number of large projects involving energy efficiency and renewable energy (including those in Sri Lanka, Ukraine and India). Previously, he was a Senior Energy Analyst in the Energy Technology Policy Division of the International Energy Agency, Paris. He has a PhD in Energy and Materials Modelling from the Technical University of Delft. He graduated with an MA in Environmental Sciences at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands.

  • Douglas J. Arent
    Executive Director, Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis (JISEA)
    National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

    Doug Arent is Executive Director of the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis at NREL. Arent is Sr. Visiting Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, serves on American Academy of Arts and Sciences Steering Committee on Social Science and the Alternative Energy Future; National Research Council Committee to Advise to USGCRP; Keystone Energy Board and Coordinating Lead Author for the 5th Assessment Report of the IPCC.
    Research interests are centered in energy and sustainability and has published on topics of clean energy, renewable energy, power systems, natural gas, and intersection of science and public policy. Arent has a Ph.D. from Princeton University, MBA from Regis University, a bachelor’s of science from Harvey Mudd College in California.

  • Dimitri Pescia
    Senior Associate, European Energy Cooperation,
    Agora Energiewende

    Dimitri Pescia is Senior Associate at Agora Energiewende, a leading German think-tank in the field of energy transformation focusing on the power sector. He previously worked for the French Department of Economic Affairs – international network of the Treasury – at the French Embassy in Berlin from 2008 to 2013. Head of section Energy, he worked to reinforce the French-German bilateral cooperation and conducted numerous studies about the German energy, environment and raw material policies. From 2005 to 2007 he worked as a scientific policy officer for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with a focus on energy efficiency, transportation and engineering. Native French speaker, Dimitri Pescia holds a Master of Science in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and an Imperial College London International Diploma.

  • Steve Sawyer
    Secretary General, Global Wind Energy Council

    Steve Sawyer joined the Global Wind Energy Council as its first Secretary General in April 2007. The Global Wind Energy Council represents the major wind energy associations (China, India, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, South Korea, Canada, USA, Europe, Germany, Italy, Turkey and France) as well as the major companies involved in the global wind industry.     Steve has worked in the energy and environment field since 1978, with a particular focus on climate change and renewable energy since 1988. He spent many years working for Greenpeace International, representing the organization at intergovernmental and industry fora primarily on energy and climate issues. At GWEC he is focused on working with intergovernmental organizations and with opening up new markets for the industry in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

  • Paddy Padmanathan
    President & CEO, ACWA Power

    Paddy Padmanathan, a professional Civil Engineer with over 35 years of experience, has served ACWA Power from 2005 as the company grew from a startup to where it is today; a leading private developer, owner and operator of power generation and desalinated water production plants headquartered in Saudi Arabia. The company has an investment value in excess of USD 30.5 billion and can generate 23+ GW of power and produce 2.5 million ㎥ /day of desalinated water to be delivered on a bulk basis to state utilities and industrial majors on long term off-take contracts under Public-Private-Partnership, Concession and Utility Services Outsourcing models.
    While ACWA Power is focused on reliably delivering electricity and desalinated water at the lowest possible cost and is thus technology neutral and fuel agnostic, and owns and operates some of the largest fossil fueled power plants, the company is also very active in the area of renewable energy leading to cost reduction of renewable energy on a global scale.
    A graduate of University of Manchester, UK, he started his career as a consulting engineer delivering infrastructure projects financed by the national treasuries and multilateral financial agencies and moved on to develop privately financed power, water and wastewater projects in over a dozen countries. A substantial period of his career before ACWA Power was with Black & Veatch, a US headquartered multinational engineer & constructor where he served as a Vice President and Corporate officer.
    He also serves on the board of directors of several companies all operating in the water and power sectors.

  • Li Junfeng
    Senior Professor, National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC)
    Presdent, Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA)
    Senior Professor (PhD Tutor), Renmin University

    Li Junfeng is currently serving as senior professor of China’s National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, the president of Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, and senior professor (PhD Tutor) at Renmin University. Meanwhile, he is a member of China’s National Energy Advisory Council, the Expert-Committee of National High-tech Program, and Academy Committee of China’s Environmental Protection Ministry. He also serves as a member of Beijing, Shanghai and Shanxi Government Low Carbon Development Committee.
    He has dedicated his 30-year career life to energy economy and energy environment studies. He was in charge of the structure and drafting of China’s Renewable Energy Law and China’s Medium and Long-Term Development Plan for Renewable Energy Development. He also participated in the research and drafting of China’s Medium and Long-Term Science-Technology Development Program Outline, the Draft of China’s Energy Law, China’s National Climate Change Program, etc. Prof. Li was recently awarded the Zayed World Future Energy Prize in the category of "lifetime achievement."
    From 1999 to 2011, Mr. Li used to serve as the Deputy Director General of Energy Research Institute (ERI), National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Chair of the Academic Committee of ERI for more than 10 years.

  • Toshimitsu Fujiki
    Director-General, Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department
    Agency for Natural Resources and Energy(ANRE) , Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan

    Toshimitsu Fujiki joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), in 1988. After serving in managerial positions in Toyama Prefectural Government between 2005 and 2008, he returned to METI and assumed a series of executive positions including Executive Assistant to the Minister, Director of the Economic and Industrial Policy Division, and Director of the Policy Planning and Coordination Division, before assuming the current position in 2015.

  • Rajendra Iyer
    Group Vice President, ABB Ltd, Switzerland

    Rajendra Iyer has been working in the field of Power grids especially the High Voltage DC transmission field for the last 21 years in ABB. He has been involved in various interesting challenges during the years by living in various countries like Sweden, China, Japan, India and now Switzerland. He has held various senior management positions in ABB throughout his career. Currently he is the Group Vice President responsible for Strategic Marketing and Business Development for the Power Grids Division at the Headquarters in Switzerland.

  • Tomas Kåberger
    Chair of Executive Board, Renewable Energy Institute
    Professor, Chalmers University, Sweden

    Tomas Kåberger has been the Chair of Executive Board of Renewable Energy Institute since its foundation in 2011.
    Academically, he got an MSc in Engineering Physics, a PhD in Physical Resource Theory, and Docent in Environmental Science at Chalmers. He has been professor in International Sustainable Energy Systems at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University, and he is currently Professor of Industrial Energy Policy at Chalmers University of Technology and serves as Distinguished Visiting Expert of bio-energy technology at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. Industrially, he has had leading roles in companies providing fuels and technology in the bio-energy industry, another company developing sustainable energy solutions for the automotive industry, and a company operating wind power plants. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Vattenfall, and the board of Industrifonden, an industrial investment foundation.
    Politically, he has served on board of Swedish and European Environmental Citizen’s organizations, several Swedish Government Committees developing energy and environmental legislation, and China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development as a member of a task force on Low-Carbon Industrialization Strategies. From 2008 until 2011 he was Director General of the National Swedish Energy Agency.

  • Takejiro Sueyoshi
    Vice-Executive Board Chair, Renewable Energy Institute

    After graduating from Tokyo University, Takejiro Sueyoshi joined the Mitsubishi Bank (the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ) in 1967 and worked for the bank until 1998.
    During his years with Nikko Asset Management as Deputy President, he was appointed as a member of the UNEP FI Steering Committee. In addition to the involvement in the UNEP FI activities in the Asia Pacific Region, he is giving many educational speeches about environmental problems and CSR/SRI in various government councils, seminars, universities and TV programs. He is a Trustee member of Carbon Disclosure Project. He was a member of the Council for Japan’s Prime Minister on Climate Change Policy.
    His publications includes “Ondanka Kogi (A lecture on Global Warming)”(Toyo Keizai), “Yugai Rensa (Chain of Harmfulness)”(Gentousha), “Green New Deal”(Editor, Kankyou Shinbun), “Saishin CSR Jijyo (The Newest Book on CSR)”

  • Teruyuki Ohno
    Executive Director, Renewable Energy Institute

    Before joining Renewable Energy Institute in August 2013, Teruyuki Ohno served as the Director General of the Bureau of Environment, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, for three years, covering a broad range of environmental issues including energy, climate change, waste management, pollution control, natural environment, and sustainable development. His notable achievements include reducing air pollution and PM emissions through “No Dirty Diesel Vehicle Strategy in Tokyo”, and implementing Japan’s first Cap-and-Trade Program in Tokyo in 2008, involving the industries and building a grand consensus. His active leadership in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency has formed the foundation of Tokyo’s energy policy. He was awarded Haagen-Smit Clean Air Awards by California Air Resources Board in 2014. His latest publication is "Energy Strategies of Municipality Governments" (Iwanami, 2013). He also serves as part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo, and a member of Seoul International Energy Advisory Council (SIEAC).

  • Mika Ohbayashi
    Director, Renewable Energy Institute

    Mika Ohbayashi is a founding member and Director at Renewable Energy Institute since August 2011. Before joining the Institute, Ohbayashi worked for International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi as Policy and Project Regional Manager for Asia Oceania. She served as Deputy Director at Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies for 8 years since its establishment in 2000. She also worked for UKFCO at the British Embassy to Japan, as Advisor for Climate Change Projects and Policies, and started her carrier in the energy field by joining Citizens' Nuclear Information Center in 1992. She coordinates many scientific study projects, takes leadership to team up various networks including national parliamentarians and local authorities, domestically and internationally to improve sustainable energy society.
