REI’s Participation in Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization
Aiming to realize global transmission interconnections to utilize more renewable energy

30 March 2016

Renewable Energy Institute, REI (formerly called Japan Renewable Energy Foundation, JREF) has joined a newly formed non-profit organization “Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization, GEIDCO,” as one of its council members. GEIDCO aims to realize global transmission interconnections to utilize more renewable energy.

Since its establishment in 2011, Renewable Energy Institute has been promoting “Asia Super Grid (ASG)” to utilize and exchange the vast renewable energy resources in Asian countries, such as wind and solar resources in Mongolia. “Global Energy Interconnection” is the global version of ASG concept, to accelerate international renewable energy use.

Power companies, universities and research institutes, global transmission companies from China, South Korea, Brazil, and Russia have joined GEIDCO.

Chairman of GEIDCO is Mr. Liu Zhenya, chairman of State Grid Corporation of China. Masayoshi Son, founder and chairman of Renewable Energy Institute (Chairman & CEO, SoftBank Group Corp.), has become one of the vice-chairs of GEIDCO, as well as Dr. Steven Chu, former Secretary of Energy in the US.

Through activities of ASG/GEIDCO, Renewable Energy Institute continues to pursue the realization of the society which is based on renewable energies without relying on fossil fuels and nuclear power.
