Geothermal Power Development in New Zealand- Lessons for Japan -

Geothermal energy development in Japan has been very slow for more than a decade, although the country has strong potential to utilize it further. This report explores how New Zealand has expanded its geothermal capacity in recent years, in order to learn some lessons from its policies and institutional mechanism and business practices and emulate the conditions which brought the success.

We express our deepest gratitude to many geothermal experts and stakeholders in both New Zealand and Japan. The report could have not been completed without their kind support.
